ABOUT
THE CASELAW COLLECTION’S COMPILER
Gary L. Sheets, Esq. experience as a practicing attorney in Ohio since 1980 led him to create what he now calls ‘The Sheets Ohio Caselaw Collection.’ As a newly admitted Ohio attorney, he recognized the difficulties inexperienced attorneys starting a new practice face. Each day, he faced more experienced attorneys whose years of experience and reading Ohio law gave them an advantage over a newly admitted attorney. He realized that to meet and overcome such an advantage, he too needed to learn Ohio law by reading it and applying it. However, sources from which he could read and learn Ohio law were expensive and he could not afford access to such expansive legal research materials, which, in the early 1980’s, were still largely paper-based books and treatises. He decided to create his own source of Ohio legal authorities. Thus, in the early 1980’s he began collecting Ohio cases using paper and indexed topics along with his 1980’s word-processing software. Over time, word-processing software and computer memory advances prompted him to develop an Ohio caselaw collection. Today, that result is reflected in ‘The Sheets Ohio Caselaw Collection’ a topically indexed and searchable collection of Ohio cases which uses word-processor software. As of June 2025, the Caselaw Collection numbers over 30,000 word-processor pages. He hopes to make the collection available at a reasonable price.
